Scotland’s hopes of a short-notice tour of New Zealand have been blocked due to a lack of finances and interest.

Scotland are expected to have few players on tour with the British and Irish Lions in South Africa later this year, so were keen to keep their frontline stars in action.

They had hoped Scotland would face top New Zealand provincial teams and the NZ Maori, Scotland’s Daily Record newspaper reported.

However, New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) officials have decided Scotland are not a big enough draw for the fans and have refused to fit them into their schedule.

“It is not going to happen,” NZRU professional rugby manager Neil Sorensen told the newspaper.

“We went out to the provincial unions in the Air New Zealand Cup to see if there was any interest.

“But we made the call last week that it wasn’t a goer financially or operationally.”
