Munster’s Australian coach Tony McGahan praised his ruthless Irish side who crushed Ospreys 43-9 to reach the European Cup semi-finals and move just two matches away from defending their title.

Munster, the 2006 and 2008 champions, will tackle fellow Irish province Leinster, who edged Harlequins 6-5, in a mouthwatering last-four showdown at Dublin’s Croke Park.

The other semi-final will see Cardiff Blues taking on former double champions Leicester at the Millennium Stadium.

“I think they’re always ruthless,” McGahan said of Munster. “I’m lucky to see them every day in training. They have a competitive streak, a drive, an ambition to be as successful as they can.

“It’s unmatched. With experience and age profile of the players, they realise they need to make the most of every opportunity and they’re certainly doing that at the moment.”

Leinster coach Michael Cheika saw two Felipe Contepomi penalties give his side victory at The Stoop.

“That was a pretty tough game. The guys in that dressing room are broken because it was so physical,” he said.

“We had to do a lot of defending, especially in the second half. It was mental as well as physical pressure.

“We showed a lot of character to defend that lead being pinned down in our territory for so long.

“Maybe we didn’t show a lot of accuracy but there was a lot of character against a quality side.

“This is a tournament we really want to win. It will now be a massive challenge against the best team in Europe.”
