The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Semi-finals, second leg
So the Mariners enter the second leg of their A-League semi-final against the Sky Blues in the box seat and the Phoenix hold home-ground…
Sydney FC have vowed to “give it to” Gold Coast United in next week’s top-of-the-table clash after knocking the A-League favourites off the top of the ladder on Sunday.
The sky blues moved a point clear of the Gold Coast after four competition rounds following their hard-fought 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix on Sunday.
Earlier, Gold Coast had suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Newcastle Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium to bring their bold predictions of an undefeated season spectacularly undone.
Having quietly gone about their business under new coach Vitezslav Lavicka as Gold Coast have grabbed all the headlines, Sydney are now out to prove a point when the sides meet at Skilled Park next Saturday.
“They (Gold Coast) are good team, but I think we’re also a good team,” said Sydney midfielder Brendan Gan, who broke the deadlock against Phoenix in the 77th minute before John Aloisi doubled the lead four minutes later.
“I think we’re playing good football and really confident football, anyone can win in the end, but we’re going to go out there and give it to them.
“I don’t think we have been flying under the radar, we’ve been putting in some good performances, but I think it’s a good thing that we’re not getting as much attention as Gold Coast.”
Gold Coast’s loss saw Jets coach Branko Culina earn bragging rights over his son Jason, while coach Miron Bleiberg claimed everyone would be delighted his outspoken club had finally lost a game.
The loss featured in an unpredictable weekend, in which fellow newcomers North Queensland claimed their first point in a dramatic 3-3 draw
