Sky blues a little stale, says Brosque

Winger Alex Brosque fears Sydney FC have become too predictable and says the players need to take responsibility for mixing things up to pull the A-League club out of its form dip.

After an encouraging start to the season under new coach Vitezslav Lavicka, Sydney’s momentum has been halted by successive losses to newcomers Gold Coast and North Queensland.

A third straight loss to Newcastle on Sunday would see Sydney surrender second spot on the tightly-contested A-League ladder and possibly lose more ground on leaders Gold Coast.

But Brosque was confident the sky blues would return to their best against the Jets at the Sydney Football Stadium, provided they made some changes to their game from recent weeks.

“Possibly we’ve sort of kept things the way they were going because things were going well,” Brosque said on Thursday.

“But I think it’s sort of possible teams have looked at the way we’ve been playing and worked us out a little bit.

“So I think maybe we need to keep teams on their toes by varying things in the style that we do it.

“Individually as players, we tend to all make the same runs and things like that … I think we just need to change it up and try and keep defences guessing.

“Going forward is where we’re having our biggest problem at the moment.”

Lavicka has been openly disappointed with his side in recent weeks and Brosque said the team had been knuckling down ahead of Sunday’s match.

“He definitely voiced the fact he was disappointed,” Brosque said of the Czech coach.

“He has been disappointed in the last two weeks and in terms of the way things are going, he’s made sure we stay together as a unit and we don’t start picking at each other and getting upset at each other.

“He’s put the challenge down to us, as to whether we can bounce back and show that we’re a championship side or one that’s going to fade off.

“It’s up to us now to stand up.”

A combination of injuries and the loss of several players to Young Socceroos duties for the FIFA U20s World in Egypt will force several changes to the side to face the Jets

Former Jets midfielder Stuart Musialik is set to make his first appearance of the season, while there is speculation Shannon Cole, Steve Corica and John Aloisi are under some pressure to hold their places.
