Allrounder Moises Henriques starred as New South Wales maintained their perfect record at the Champions League Twenty20 tournament and advanced to the League stage with a 35 run win over English county Sussex in New Delhi.

The Blues scored 2-130 with youngsters Phillip Hughes (62 off 64) and Henriques (51 off 33) compiling an unbroken stand of 90 of 11.2 overs.

The powerful NSW bowling lineup then restricted Sussex to 8-95, with fast medium bowler Henriques (3-23) claiming the wickets of Chris Nash (24 off 30) and Piyush Chawla (0) with successive deliveries to reduce the Sharks to 5-64 in the 14th over.

The unstoppable Blues claimed two more wickets in the following over from Nathan Hauritz, who executed a slick run out of Joe Gatting (9 off 16) and bowled Yasir Arafat (1 off 3) with his next delivery.

Henriques claimed his third wicket when Andy Hodd (12 off 10) was out to a fine leaping boundary catch from young allrounder Steven Smith (1-19), who claimed the wicket of Hamilton-Brown (13 off 24) with his first ball.

There was an injury concern for NSW with main strike bowler Brett Lee appearing to damage his left thumb in attempting to take a hot return catch off a fierce drive from Rory Hamilton-Brown in the third over.

However, Lee (1-8) returned late in the innings to complete a tidy stint and later doused fears about his injury.

“It’s a bit sore, it’s okay,” Lee said in a television interview.

The second strong win in as many games clinched the Blues spot in the last eight League Stage.

“We’re only a small way into the tournament at the moment, so we’ve got to make sure that we concentrate very hard and back up well,” Lee said.

Lee made an immediate impact, knocking out the off stump of acting Sharks captain and England representative Ed Joyce with the third ball of the innings.

Sussex’s chances of reaching a testing target on a slow and low pitch probably disappeared when hard hitting West Indies allrounder Dwayne Smith (13 off 15) was bowled by paceman Doug Bollinger (1-13) to slide to 3-49 in the 10th over.

NSW captain Simon Katich, who topscored for the Blues at number three in their opening game win over South Africa’s Diamond Eagles, won the toss again, but surprisingly didn’t bat himself.

Hughes and David Warner (14 off 18) put on 35 for the first wicket before the Blues lost two wickets for five runs in successive overs.

Warner was brilliantly run out by a direct hit from West Indian Dwayne Smith.

Big hitting wicketkeeper Daniel Smith (2 off 5) who was promoted to number three, was caught in the deep of Indian spinner Chawla.
