Autumn tours are like a mini-Rugby World Cup

It’s a great time to be a rugby fan. The world’s top teams are on show in Britain, Ireland and France, and if they’re not all playing each other in a round robin, they’re at least playing some worthy opponents.

I see this Friday/Saturday/Sunday as a pick-em weekend.

Wallabies versus Ireland?

Pick-em, it could go either way. Strong Irish second row and great centres versus resurgent, new-look Wallaby backs coming off a win and well rested.

England/Argentina?

You’ve heard of Twelve Angry Men? Think of eight smiling men. By this time the Puma’s pack will have seen the videos of the Twickenham game and will be figuring out ho to scrum the English forwards into the dust.

On the other hand, Wilko is a wonderful anchor, and with his kicking, his defence, his distribution and total coolness, he’s a huge plus. But England have to try to compensate for an unhappy coach whose enormous load was increased when Stuart Barnes called for his head in yesterday’s London Times.

So this makes this game a pick ‘em as well.

France and the Boks?

In the green corner we have the world champs, in the blue corner we have the enigmatic French who, so I read, are putting Harinordoquy, Dusautoir and Picamoles on the field – a trio capable of taking any game by the scruff of the neck.

The Boks are without Frans Steyn, but Morne, Das Boot, is on board.

It’s a great weekend for rugby fans. But only the brave ones will be betting the farm.
