Scott's confidence edging back after horror year

Former world No.3 Adam Scott says there were times this year when his confidence sunk so low he wondered how he was ever going to play good golf again.

In what has been a horror year by his lofty standards, the Queenslander said he could relate to weekend hackers who struggled just to keep the ball on line.

“Absolutely, I think everyone feels it,” Scott said on Wednesday.

“When you’re playing good, you never think you’re going to play bad.

“When you’re playing bad, you never know how you’re going to play good again.

“There were a couple of points … where I really didn’t know which way I was going to hit it.

“I just had to aim straight and hope it was not too far either way, it was a terrible feeling.”

Having been a regular fixture in the world top 10 in previous years, Scott has slumped to No.62, his year blighted by regular missed cuts, including at three of the four majors.

While he has had past issues with his putting, he said the fact that his normally superb ball-striking deserted him this year was difficult to handle.

“I tried to change a few things that I had done in the past and it didn’t work out, so hopefully the lesson was learned,” he said.

But Scott will be happy if this is as low as his career gets and he can sense better times ahead, heartened by a third-placed finish in his most recent event, the Singapore Open.

“I felt I had all parts of my game under control, which hadn’t been the case for most of this year,” he said.

“That was a nice feeling to take out on the golf course.”

It has given him enough confidence to rate himself a chance of outplaying a field including Tiger Woods and winning this week’s Australian Masters.

“I definitely think I can contend this week … my game feels better than it has all year, so that’s got to be a good thing,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to this week, to play here at home is going to be enjoyable.

“All the factors here this week, with Tiger being here, the atmosphere is a lot bigger and there’s a buzz about the place. So I want to get right in the mix.”
