AFL needs to encourage player transfers

It was strange to hear the words of Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams saying that he won’t pick any players who are going to defect to the new Gold Coast Franchise, seeing it as a waste of time in playing these players who are moving during the season.

If you remember, Mark Williams joined the Brisbane Bears franchise as a foundation member. What is the difference in what he did and what is happening now?

The only difference is that he was looking at it in a different perspective as a player in the 1980s and now as a coach in 2010.

Is it a case of defecting or is it a chance for a player to move to a new club with a different challenge?

The days of being loyal are slowly going for players to play at the one club. If the offer is reasonable, why not? A player’s career doesn’t last long, so why can’t a player look to the future.

The NRL has had this player movement system in place for years now. Successful or not, player movement must happen.
