Here’s a salary cap suggestion: get rid of the Salary Cap and introduce a standard payment system, with bonus payments. All clubs pay their players a standard fee, which goes up with experience.

0-2 years NRL experience has a base pay. 3-6 years NRL is the next level. 7-9 and 10+ rewards those who go the distance with their career. Extra pay for being captain.

The NRL pays the players for State Of Origin and Test Matches, with bonuses for captaincy. The NRL also pays the players and the clubs for loyalty: each player who plays five years for the one club gets an additional yearly payment; ten years is another additional yearly payment.

Five players at the one club with five years at that club is a bonus yearly payment for the club. Two players at the one club with ten years at that club is another bonus yearly payment for the club.

This means, that if you have five years NRL experience, you will earn the same amount of money playing for the Storm, Rabbitohs, Sharks, Broncos.

This also means that, instead of clubs luring players with huge contracts, they need to lure players in other ways: the facilities at the Home Stadium and the Training Ground, the other players at the club, the coach and the coaching staff, the culture and environment of the city. And so on.

Then you will find clubs looking for other ways to reward their players. For instance: money for tries, money for successful conversions, money for metres gained.

These amounts could be set by the NRL to avoid outlandish payments.
