A respectful 1-0 loss at the hands of Chelsea in the FA Cup final was Portsmouth’s last hoorah before the club faces a mass overhaul. But fans at Wembley were predictably proud of their heroes. And rightfully so.

After a horror season that has seen the club go into administration and be relegated from the top flight, Pompey was brave against the league champion. It was only a superb free kick from golden boot winner Didier Drogba that separated the two sides.

Chelsea hit the woodwork five times in an entertaining opening half before Pompey had the best chance of the game in the second.

Julian Belletti brought down Aruna Dindane in the area and the German-born Ghanaian, Kevin-Prince Boateng, stepped up to take the spot kick.

But his strike was hit without purpose down the centre and Petr Cech produced a comfortable save with his feet.

Then it was Drogba striking a fine free kick into the corner of David James’ net from 20 yards.

Chelsea got a penalty of its own in the 88th minute, with Frank Lampard hitting his penalty wide.

The final whistle sounded to signal a league-cup double for the Londoners, but Pompey’s loyal fans stayed at Wembley.

Tears were visible in the eyes of Boateng, before the fans lifted his spirits, congratulating Chelsea on their win whilst being proud of their very own.

The Pompey squad has undoubtedly played together for the last time with player sales set to help the club get back on track.

For those loyal fans, let’s hope Portsmouth can fight in the Championship and work its way back into the top flight in the near future.

After all, the Pompey fans have shown to be the real heroes in this horror journey.
