With just nine games left in his impressive coaching career, Paul Roos admitted after his side’s loss to Collingwood that these are the nights he won’t miss when he hangs up the whistle.
Roos comfortably made the transition from champion player to successful coach, famously leading the Swans to the 2005 premiership among a long list of impressive highs.
But there have also been lows and clearly one of them came at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night in Sydney’s 25-point loss to Collingwood in front of a disappointing crowd of 43,585.
At quarter-time, Roos was seen berating his players, who were obviously not following his instructions.
It was a rare outburst from the typically laidback coach and he tried to explain it afterwards.
“We worked on some things during the week with our kick-ins,” he said.
“We talked about kicking it long and the first three, we kicked it short.
“That’s when it gets frustrating as a coach and was something we were pretty clear on with our players.
“You wonder when you’ve given a clear instruction and players just don’t carry it out, it’s probably one of the things I won’t miss with coaching.”
He found some more frustrations against the Magpies, with some repeated skill errors.
“And the frustrating thing was a lot of the skill errors were non-pressured skill errors,” he said.
“The amount of times we just turned the ball over when there was just no pressure … their pressure was really good in general and they do that really well against us, but a lot of our turnovers were with no-one around us.”
Perhaps the coaching game has finally caught up with Roos, who hasn’t yet decided what he’ll do when he hands the reins over to John Longmire at season’s end.
But it is becoming increasingly obvious he has picked the right time to get out of coaching.
