It is a long way from the MCG to Chandigarh’s Sector 16 Stadium, but the feeling of disbelief at both venues was much the same.

Reverberations from Saturday’s drawn AFL grand final between St Kilda and Collingwood reached as far afield as the north Indian sporting venue, where Australia’s touring cricketers sat enthralled as both teams played out an epic match.

While openers Shane Watson and Simon Katich progressed in the middle against the Indian Board President’s XI, the rest of the squad kept updated on the contest via internet radio streaming.

There were gasps and groans throughout the second half as St Kilda launched a second half fightback, then wide eyes and exclamations when the final siren sounded.

A grand final sweep for the Norm Smith Medal was won by the team’s security co-ordinator and Collingwood supporter Frank Dimasi, who successfully drew Lenny Hayes from the laundry bag then agonised over the sliding fortunes of his team.

Team spokesman Lachy Patterson, who looked after the sweep, will now prepare another, though he is under pressure from the squad’s NSW contingent to do the same for the NRL grand final next Sunday.
