Lexus interested in joining V8 Supercars

Lexus is the latest car manufacturer to be reportedly interested in joining the V8 Supercar category.

With V8 Supercars hoping to bring in more manufacturers as part of its “Car of the Future” program, the Japanese mark has become the latest to join those reportedly considering breaking the Holden/Ford duopoly.

Lexus Australia boss Tony Cramb says an “initial meeting” between the brand and V8 Supercars has occurred.

“We did meet at the (Melbourne Cup) lounge and chatted about a few different things,” Cramb told carpoint.com.au.

“But it is fair to say they were only preliminary discussions. It was a general discussion.”

Cramb downplayed the significance of the meeting but did say the manufacturer is looking at options after rumours of it joining the German-based DTM series never came to fruition.

The obvious choice of model for Lexus to enter would be its V8-powered, rear-wheel drive IS-F sports sedan, which has the same footprint as a Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon.

“It would be too long a bow to draw at this stage that we are going into V8s,” Cramb said.

“But as with all companies, you look at all options and, to do that, you need to talk to people.

“We need to look at the technical regulations and see what the differences are before we go any further.

“The IS-F would make a great V8 Supercar, wouldn’t it?”

German giants BMW and Mercedes are the other manufacturers reported to have shown an interest in joining the V8 championship.
