Another dangerous date for the All Blacks

There’s been quite a bit of discussion recently regarding the possible dangers ahead for the All Blacks in the 2011 World Cup, and in no way does this post take sides in the debate.

It merely seeks to point out that along with September 24, the day on which the ABs play France in their pool game, there’s another date, two in fact, both Tri Nations games, that are potential minefields for the NZ XV: July 30, when they play the Boks in Wellington, and August 6, when they go up against the Wallabies at Eden Park.

Later in August the ABs will take on the Boks in SA and the Wallabies at Suncorp, but the July 30 and August 6 games are the only home Tests they’ll play against the Aussies and the Saffers before the start of the RWC.

Were the ABs to lose one or both away games, it would certainly cause some unease in NZ, but nobody would be putting on their life jackets.

However, were they to lose even one of their games at home – and heaven forbid it should be the one at Eden Park, showcase of Kiwi rugby and site of the final – then the NZ public would start to wonder if their ship was in danger of foundering.

The team itself would be dealt a dark psychological blow, and Graham Henry and the NZRU would have to resort to some serious damage control. So, as I see it, the ABs are going to have to put their bodies on the line in not just one game but three.

That should make for some intense rugby and some great theatre.
