There have been many decisions which have shaped the local sporting world, for better or worse. But there were also decisions which have caused some codes to go backwards and lose the momentum they’d been building.

The obvious answer is the Super League saga, which ripped rugby league in half. The Super League killed off expansion teams and consolidated Sydney teams through mergers, temporarily removed the Rabbitohs, and was a reason for the demise of the North Sydney Bears.

Many thought it was the beginning of the end for rugby league, but it continues to recover. But what if it never happened?

The AFL may have had the chance to expand, with a second Sydney team when the Swans made the first grand final in 1996 and struck while the iron was hot. Even Kevin Sheedy wondered why there wasn’t a Sydney rival back then instead of 2012.

Considering the state of rugby league back then, it would have been a perfect opportunity for AFL to strike, but League was left alone to recover from the Super League wounds.

The point of this article is for fellow Roarers to submit their ‘what if’s’ of their favourite codes.

It’s interesting to consider what an alternative sporting landscape would look like, so let’s have fun with this idea.
