So, Nathan Tinkler got his man. The seven time premiership coach, Wayne Bennett, will pack Darius Boyd in his luggage and move his caravan of success up the highway to Newcastle.

For the Newcastle Knights, it provides the opportunity to move the well-supported club back to the top of the table.

For Wayne, it provides him with the challenge, the lifestyle, and the money for his ultimate goals of both winning premierships and supporting his family.

It will lead to Newcastle finally having a structure and resources that can capture the undoubted talent that exists within the Hunter region. It will also provide opportunities for kids who support the Knights to live the dream and play for the club they support, as Tinkler looks to invest in youth structures.

Wayne’s arrival will lead to some pretty honest and needed changes. The first change that will happen (should Darius sign) is that finally, Kurt Gidley will have a defined role.

For most of his career, Gidley has slotted in where needed as the ultimate utility, but under Bennett, he will either be the fullback or the five eighth.

The second change that will occur is that Wayne will no doubt improve the depth of Newcastle’s playing list. For many seasons, Newcastle has had the star players but what has cost them is the bottom half of their list not having depth.

Wayne will endeavour to change this through both purchasing players and instilling confidence in those ones he deems good enough to keep pulling on the Newcastle jersey.

The only caution to come with this signing is that it won’t happen over night.

Bennett will get Newcastle to where they want to be but in doing this it may not grab a premiership, at least in the length of his contract.

The horse is ready, Darius is in the suitcase and the great white Knight is about to head down the highway and take up his reign as boss of the Knights.
