Congratulations are in order, belatedly, for the Dallas Mavericks, who spurred in signatory fashion to win the NBA championship by beating the Miami Heat. Sorry Dwayne and co!

However, my pop of bubbly today goes out to the iconic sensation, 13-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams, who graced the tennis court once again at the Eastbourne Aegon International tourney since she suffered from a medical condition that denied her play for almost a year (since July 2010 Wimbledon).

The comeback, as it has been dubbed, was short-lived, after third seed Russian, Vera Zvonareva, who had lost in the last match Serena played in the Wimbledon final in 2010, quickly served her a cold dish of revenge in a match which lasted three hours, twelve minutes. The former won the game 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Tedium was evident in the second round game on Wednesday, especially for a player who has been operated upon for hematoma – a bleeding condition under the skin – after her trademark bull-dog resilience was outlasted in the third set even as she came back from 5-2 to 5-5.

It was another fall from grace, and grass, after she had gone two years (2008-2010) on the grass court undefeated.

It is not only Serena who has been dogged by injuries. Elder sister Venus had the gods on her side when she breezed past Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-2 before meeting Daniela Hantuchova on Thursday, who put a halt to her welcome party.

It is refreshing to have the Williams sisters back, whose hiatus has cost some of us who love the fierce sisterly rivalry. Either a re-union in the doubles finals or just an epic clash in subsequent rounds of tourneys would be great to see.

Optimism and perseverance are key on this comeback trail. Venus said she “just needs matches” in her quest for fitness. Otherwise, they both have confirmed participation in the Wimbledon tournament which gets underway on June 20 2011.
