AFL club Hawthorn have re-signed coach Alastair Clarkson for an additional three years, extending his contract through until the end of 2014.

Currently in his seventh season at Hawthorn, Clarkson had been in protracted contact talks and had also been been linked with Adelaide and Melbourne, who are looking for head coaches after the respective exits of Neil Craig and Dean Bailey.

The Hawks are assured of a top four finish in 2011, but Clarkson believes there is still much work ahead in achieving his long-term plan.

“When we set out on this undertaking at the end of 2004, we thought it would be a 10 year process in which we wanted to achieve some success,” Clarkson said.

“We have achieved some success, but not to the extent that we want, and we recognise there’s still some unfinished business; that there’s more this group wants to achieve together.”

Clarkson delivered Hawthorn’s 10th premiership in 2008.
