Roar fear Emerton backlash in A-League

The loss of Matt McKay may still be felt at the Brisbane Roar but they have another Socceroo on their mind ahead of Saturday night’s A-League clash with Sydney FC.

Roar giant Erik Paartalu was the first to admit on Thursday that the Roar “miss” their inspirational former skipper, now plying his trade for Scottish giant Rangers.

Not that you can tell – A-League champions Brisbane looked like the Roar of old in their 1-0 win over Central Coast in their grand final re-match last weekend.

But Paartalu believed McKay’s departure would lift his Roar teammates to a new level – and just as well.

Paartalu expected a “fired-up” Brett Emerton to meet them at Sydney Football Stadium this weekend.

He believed the Socceroos star would still be smarting from missing a penalty that could have decided the blockbuster first round clash with Harry Kewell’s Melbourne Victory – and predicted a backlash.

“They all have a point to prove especially Emerton,” Paartalu said.

“Unfortunately for him he missed a penalty and he will be fired up on his home debut.

“It was hard for them to have a man sent off so they will be eager to go on the right foot at home.

“There was massive hype (ahead of the Victory game)… but I think the hype is still going to be big for Emerton’s first game at home – no doubt they will be up for it for sure.”

Paartalu said McKay’s departure was still having an impact on the Roar squad – but could only find positives.

“We definitely miss his work rate but the boys have stepped in and know we have to give a bit more,” he said.

“I think everyone has taken a little bit more responsibility after Matty left.

“Everyone has to add a little bit extra now and work a little bit harder because Matty McKay would run around like a headless chook for the whole game.”

Bolstered by the likely return of livewire Henrique (ankle) for the Sydney clash, Paartalu believed the Roar – on a record 29-game unbeaten run – were still the team to beat.

“We are out in front,” he said.

“Last year everyone wanted to knock us off and I don’t see anything different this year.”
