If you believe all the talk in the press, Todd Carney is heading to the Shire in 2012. It could be announced in the next few days that the 2010 Daly M Player of the Year will be in the sky blue of Cronulla-Sutherland next season.

But it is believed that four NRL clubs and several French rugby clubs are interested in the crafty playmaker.

The signing of Carney would give the Sharks a double celebration after Australian representative and Cronulla-Sutherland skipper Paul Gallen extending his contract to stay with the club this week.

The addition of Carney would definitely give the Sharks a boost and almost erase the pain of losing props Luke Douglas to the Titans and Kade Snowden to the Knights.

Speculation of the club;s future and poor crowds has clouded things in recent times, but the acquisition of Carney would give the club some much needed good news.

So what does a player like Carney bring to a club like the Sharks? Well, we all know about his so-called party lifestyle and his ups and downs with previous clubs rules. We also know that he is one hell of a player.

The Shire’s laid back attitude and surf culture could just be the right fit for Carney. Sharks captain Paul Gallen is testament to that. Once a bad boy, in the past few seasons we have witnessed the change in attitude of Gallen. The Sharks club has no doubt been an influence on him and has seen him develop into one of the best forwards in the world.

The signing of Carney will no doubt see the crowds flock back to Toyota Park along with membership and sponsorship increasing. But it could possibly see a reshuffle to their roster for season 2012. They already have Wade Graham, Albert Kelly and junior Kangaroo Chad Townsend on the books, not to mention boom fullback Nathan Gardiner.

The likes of these players combining with Carney must give coach Shane Flanagan goose bumps as his side looks to improve on what was an overachieving year for the Sharks on the field.

Personally, I’d love to see Todd Carney representing the Shire and help turn the fortunes of the club around. It would be great to see him prove all of his critics wrong and force journalist to write something good about the bloke for a change.

Good luck on whatever you choose to do in your future, Todd.
