Should SBS broadcast the Wallabies again?

Last week I posted that SBS had arranged to broadcast the late-night match between the Wallabies and Wales. No-one was sure how this would go.

Having watched the game, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did. I throught the pre match promo was the best I have seen in a couple of years for rugby.

Judging by their excellent coverage of football, SBS have learned to look for skill and passion when covering sport. The SBS promo had little of the big hits and a slowly read script that let the picture show the spirit of the sport.

Mike Tomalaris, an SBS journalist, headed the panel in a very intelligent manner, and led the rugby experts Matt Burke and Al Baxter in a professional and authentic way. Tomalaris made them look good.

Of course they have qualifications, but Tomalaris’ leadership and direction of his panel members emphasised them and the match as the important things, while he took a background position.

I’d welcome anyone else’s thoughts on the manner in which SBS handled the broadcast, which from what I understand was arranged at short notice. Are Channels Nine or Seven better, when they broadcast?

What message needs to go to SBS and the Australian Rugby Union on any future SBS agreements?
