The second coming of coach John Kosmina looked to have rejuvenated Adelaide as they drew 2-2 in an action-packed A-League encounter with his former club Sydney FC on Thursday night.

Daniel Mullen and Dario Vidosic scored for the Reds in Kosmina’s first game at the helm, while Karol Kisel and teenager Dimitri Petratos kept things level in the SFS clash.

The draw prevented the Sky Blues from climbing to second spot on the ladder and kept Adelaide winless for their sixth game on the trot.

After a physical start to the match, the visitors went in front after eight minutes when a Vidosic corner found Mullen in the box who headed home.

Sydney marquee man Brett Emerton had the hosts’ first chance, but his shot went wide.

It was Slovak import Kisel who levelled the score at 1-1 in the 19th minute when referee Jarred Gillett awarded Sydney a penalty after Adelaide defender Nigel Boogaard tackled Brazilian Bruno Cazarine in the box.

The Sky Blues looked like going ahead just before the break when Cazarine connected with a Jamie Coyne cross, but his shot forced a save from Reds goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.

Sydney burst out of the blocks in the second stanza when Cazarine again found himself in front of goal, this time his header only denied by the woodwork.

But Adelaide then snatched back the lead in the 55th minute when Liam Reddy came off his line to stop the approaching Bruce Djite, fouling the striker in the box and handing a penalty to Adelaide.

Vidosic stepped up to the spot, and even though Reddy blocked his shot, the ball went only as far as the striker’s feet and he duly accepted the second chance to make it 2-1 to Adelaide.

Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka brought Finnish import Juho Makela on for a tired looking Rhyan Grant in the 60th minute in an effort to add some strike force.

But it was young-gun Dimitri Petratos who equalised for the Sky Blues with a spectacular volley from about 10 metres out with 25 minutes remaining.

In what was a fiery encounter, eight players earned yellow cards – four for each team – with Adelaide’s Iain Ramsay sent off for his second yellow just before full-time.
