Bernard Tomic wins five set epic over Verdasco

Bernard Tomic has won a five set match against Fernando Verdasco, initially going down two sets to love against the 22nd seed before storming back into the game.

Tomic was laboured in the opening two sets, and although he had numerous chances to break the serve of Verdasco, struggled to convert. The Kooyong Classic winner had not left off from where he finished over the past weekend – and instead of starting well, was staring down the barrel of a two sets to love blackhole.

Verdasco, sporting a bright fluro outfit, was on fire earlier before appearing to burn out late in the match.

Tomic defied the heat to rally from two sets to love down, and was able to overrun 2009 semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco 4-6 6-7 (7-3) 6-4 6-2 7-5 in four hours and 11 minutes.

The experience Spainard looked dejected as Tomic overwhelmed him late in the game.

Tomic’s reward for winning his longest-ever match is a clash on Wednesday with American Sam Querrey. The tantalising fourth-round prospect is 16-times grand slam champion Roger Federer.
