Rod Laver Arena played host to a blockbuster as Bernard Tomic and Fernando Verdasco went head to head for four hours and eleven minutes in a five set match, with the Australian finally prevailing 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

Tomic would have been cursing his luck, having drawn a class player like Verdasco in the first round of a Grand Slam, while facing an early blackhole at two sets to love down.

Verdasco presented challenges to Tomic’s unconventional game, as the Spaniard clearly enjoyed playing from the baseline, using his wonderful topspin forehand to win the majority of points against the young Australian.

However, as we have seen from Verdasco, an inability to remain consistent throughout the course of a match cost him again.

As the game wore on Verdasco looked tired and muttered to himself at many times. After four hours of play, Tomic looked far the fresher of the two men.

In the end, Tomic was able to secure a big victory – and now faces American Sam Querrey in the second round.
