There are opinions and then there are opinions. Some are great and should be heard by all, whereas others should be held to ones own.

Aker. Jason Akermanis.

Why do the media continually place a microphone in front of this guy? Please don’t reply with “because it creates headlines and sells, controversy sells.” It’s beyond the pale.

On a radio station on the Sunshine Coast today, Aker once again went too far and was simply put, way too inappropriate.

The former Brisbane and Western Bulldogs player said that the outpouring of sympathy and the tributes that flowed from Stynes’ passing was “overkill.”

Aker continued his rant, commenting that the late Melbourne great “was a nasty man in his day. He had a nice turn of phrase and he made sure you knew how he felt.”

Was that enough from the 2001 Brownlow medallist? Don’t be ignorant. We all know that he loves the resonance of his own voice.

This is when Aker really kicked the boot in.

“What amazes me is yes he was a legend of the game and did a great job and wonderful things with kids, but you know there are a bunch of people who have done just as much who don’t get any recognition. I think it’s a bit out of kilter.”

And it went on.

“He (Stynes) has got a state funeral – do all football players get a state funeral? There’s something about it all the just made me feel uncomfortable. Jim’s good but is he that good?”

I had to pick up my jaw from two metres down when Aker made that remark.

Aker is fast becoming, if he isn’t so already, the forgotten person and that guy who makes people cringe. He is entitled to his opinions however this is unacceptable – no need for it.

Why say it? Perhaps it is an extremely lame attempt to promote is profile before making an appearance on an out of date and bad reality television show. The only good thing is the money it raises for various charities.

To Aker, if you don’t have anything intelligent to add just shut up.

To the media, leave this ‘gutter’ journalism to those two nightly shows we all know of.
