Day 2 at Roland Garros saw the top seeds conformably move into the second round with straight sets victories, which included a win for Australian teenager, Bernard Tomic who is seeded at a grand slam at the first time of his career.

Tomic crusied to a straight sets victory over Austrian qualifier, Andreas Haider-Maurer 7-6 6-3 6-3. The win for Tomic sets up a 2nd round clash with Santiago Giraldo and a win there could see a potential matchup with Brit, Andy Murray.

Fellow Australian, Lleyton Hewitt who was playing his first match since foot surgery in February was controversially handed a wildcard into the tournament, but couldn’t make the best of the opportunity losing to Slovenian, Blaz Kavcic in four sets 7-6 6-3 6-7 6-3.

Australian, Matthew Ebden was also in action on day 2 but went down to #24 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in a competitive match 6-4 6-4 7-6.

There were no problems for the top male seeds with Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych all progressing with straight set victories.

The upsets were all left to the women’s draw with the #12 seeded Sabine Lisicki losing in straight sets to Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4 6-3.

Reigning Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka survived an early scare to move into the second round with a 3 set win over Alberta Brianti. The women’s world #1 was a set and 4-0 down in the second before winning 12 of the last 14 games of the match.

“I started well but my game just collapsed,” Azarenka admitted post match. Defending Roland Garros champion, Li Na had an easier route into the second round winning in straight sets against Sorana Cirstea.

An interesting situation occurred in the men’s match between and Alex Bogomolov and Arnaud Clement of France. Bogomolov was down a match point at 5-4 in the fifth before retiring due to leg cramps.

“I didn’t want to risk a potential ligament damage or something. And you can’t get a trainer for that,” said Bogomolov. The incident should be investigated after a majority of betting companies do refund bets made on players who retire injured.

Day 3 at the French Open will see highly touted 16 year old Australian, Ashleigh Barty take on #4 seed, Petra Kvitova and Jarmila Gajdosova will take on Slovakian, Magdalena Rybarikova.
