United set to sell Federico Macheda

Manchester United are almost certain to lose striker Federico Macheda during the January transfer window after the player’s agent went on the record, asking Sir Alex Ferguson to let the 21 year old leave Old Trafford this winter.

Despite his age, Macheda has already had a tumultuous career in the English Premier League, although he has struggled to make the first team in any competition of late.

It seems that this depth of talent at United and a lack of opportunities for the striker have forced his agent, Giovanni Bia, to encourage Ferguson to let the player leave during the transfer window.

Per ItaSportPress (h/t Football Italia):

“How can he [Macheda] be decisive for the team if he never plays?

“Manchester United have some phenomenal players in attack, so it’s difficult for Federico to find space.

“It’s not true what they write in the English press that he’s going through a bad spell. He wants to play and if he cannot do that by January, then we’ll try to find an alternative solution. I will talk to Sir Alex Ferguson over the next few days.

“Federico was requested by German and Spanish teams over the summer, but the English club preferred to keep hold of him.

“I hope they understand the situation and let him leave in January, because it makes no sense to keep a 21-year-old on the bench.”

As Bia alludes to, Macheda’s playing time as a striker is clearly restricted by the abundance of attacking options that the Red Devils have at their disposal – many of whom sit above the youngster in the pecking order.

Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez are all world class players who rank above Macheda, and with even some of those players (like Welbeck and Hernandez) struggling for regular minutes, it is highly unlikely that the 21 year old will find good playing time at Old Trafford this season.

A move away from the Manchester club seems inevitable for Macheda. The fairy tale-like start to Macheda’s playing career at the Red Devils seems a far cry from the figure who now sits on the substitutes bench all too often.

With van Persie scoring and young players like Angelo Henriquez and even Nick Powell on hand as attacking assets, Macheda’s time at Old Trafford seems to be over.

Kiko does not have a place at the Red Devils this season and he cannot afford to be held back by the club any longer.

Ferguson should just cut his losses, like he did with Diego Forlan and Giuseppe Rossi, and let Macheda leave United during the January transfer window.
