Ten year old sets sights on Socceroos

Gun Westmead Tigers captain Brent Wilson is focusing on his form in the Under 15s competition, and admits that he has also set his sights on a Socceroos call-up, despite being way too young to don the Australia jersey any time soon.

The 14 year old has been a revelation since being given the captain’s armband by local coach Juan Guererra last year, in a Tigers team full of bright young stars.

Wilson seems to have convinced himself that he can be a really good player within a few years, next to the likes of Robbie Kruse on the wing or Brett Holman in the midfield.

He is clearly ahead of the Tigers’ number two striker, Joel Smith, in the coaches’ eyes, and he believes that he can challenge the club record of 15 goals in the under 15s competition.

Those 15 goals represent solid form, which is probably enough to become a rep player at local level – a mere stepping stone on Wilson’s way to becoming a hero more popular than Mark Viduka in the eyes of the Australian public.

“Representing Australia would be a great achievement” said a surprisingly mature Wilson. “I’ve made it a personal goal. I want the role. My coach says I’m a great captain. Now I want Holger Osieck to see me play.”

“If he gets me in early, then think how great I’ll be when I’m 18.”

He then let himself down by saying “I’m ready to go right now, come at me bro!”

While Wilson was not able to secure a switch to local rep club Parramatta Eagles, he said the experience of being captain was a worthwhile one.

“…I’m just trying to bang the goals in. Once I can hit in a scissor kick, or nutmeg a few defenders, people will see I’m the next Viduka.”

Wilson has turned a few heads with his personal ambition, but local coaches do believe his goals are quite realistic, given the fact that Michael Beauchamp also announced his ambition to get a Socceroos call-up.
