Roger Federer begins his tilt for a record fifth Australian Open title today against young Frenchman Benoit Paire. Join us for live commentary on the Rod Laver Arena clash this afternoon.
Federer needs little introduction. Arguably the greatest player of the modern era the Swiss master is chasing another grand slam title (it would be his 18th).
He has been in Melbourne this week fine tuning his game, having decided not to play a tournament in the lead up to the event. If nothing else he should be fresh and raring to go, which may not be what Paire wants to hear.
The young Frenchman enjoyed is best year on tour last year and is currently ranked 46 in the world. Obviously no mug with the racquet having reached his first ATP final last year (in Belgrade), Paire may give the Fed express enough of a hit out for him to gauge where his game is at.
Interestingly, Paire sights Marat Safin as his favourite player when growing up. In the strong likelihood that he struggles against Federer, we can only hope the Safin influence shines through and offers us a ray of entertainment.
Having said that, even when the Swiss ace ruthlessly deconstructs hapless opponents its often the most enjoyable one sided contest you are likely to see.
The two have met on one occasion with Federer defeating Paire in Basel last year.
Tall and thin, expect Paire to rely on his serve and a consistent if not spectacular backhand to try and upset Federer’s usually rock solid apple cart.
Federer? Look for him to be good!
It will surely be a great experience for Paire, taking on the 17 time Grand Slam winner on centre court. But if Federer gets on top early it could be a blink and you’ll miss it performance.
