The key mistake the AFL keeps making in its attitude towards high contact
The AFL need a more simple approach to high contact and one that makes players accountable, regardless of intent.
I’d never thought of it this way until I heard Brent Sanderson talking about what a “wonderful product” the AFL was, and then it struck me.
Brent Sanderson was just a proud parent.
The kids who play for the Crows are all his boys. He didn’t want their reputations tarnished. He loves those kids.
And I can see clearly now. It doesn’t end there.
Think about it.
Brent was saying that the government ministers, the ASADA drug testers and the football code CEOs are proud parents too.
Of course they’re proud parents. They’re proud parents every day of their lives.
They have kids too. They love those kids. They want to see them succeed at anything and everything.
They don’t want their kids wasting their lives and taking risks. They don’t want them ending their sporting careers in potentially an irreversible downward spiral.
No needles, no sniffing, no hiding in dark places, no supplements.
No descending into hell on earth like Ben Cousins.
I’d never seen Andrew Demetriou or any of the other CEOs in that light before.
They are the guys who care what happens to our boys. It is not only about running a competition.
They wanted to make a statement, and yep, they might have over-reacted a bit, but we’re talking about our kids here!
So thank you ASADA and thank you to our CEOs.
Thank you to the Federal and State Governments for supporting our kids.
And thank you for sending a warning to our kids.
Go and make us parents proud again, as you have through all your tender years. You don’t need to take drugs.
Best of luck in your sporting careers.
