Haddin on standby for Wade

Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has a sprained ankle and Brad Haddin will be flown to Mohali on Monday to be placed on standby for Australia’s third Test against India.

Cricket Australia (CA) released a statement on Monday confirming that scans of Wade’s ankle had revealed a sprain following a mishap during a casual game of basketball.

The Test squad had been given a break from training on Friday and Saturday and Wade fronted for training on Sunday unable to participate because of his swollen right ankle.

Scans were taken in Mohali and team doctor Peter Brukner sent the results back to Australia for further review before a decision was taken to put former Test gloveman Haddin on the next available plane.

The third Test starts on Thursday with Australia trailing 2-0 in the four-match series.

Victoria’s Wade has been in the wars on the Indian tour, suffering a fractured cheekbone on the day before the second Test in Hyderabad and playing the match with the aid of painkillers.

Test allrounder Moises Henriques backed his 35-year-old NSW teammate Haddin — who has scored 468 runs at 52 in seven Sheffield Shield matches this summer — to take over if required.

“Bradley being such a seasoned campaigner now and he has toured here before so he has got that experience,” Henriques said of the 43-Test veteran.

“So I’m sure if he was needed, he’d certainly come in and do a fantastic job.”
