Tonight’s AFC Champions League knockout clash in Gosford between the Central Coast Mariners and Guangzhou Evergrande could not be more of a mismatch. Find out if the Mariners can claim an historic upset with live scores and commentary from 7.30pm AEST.
Even David would be putting his money on Goliath in this tussle, as the might and millions of China look to flex their muscles against Central Coast’s little club that could.
On paper, Guangzhou trump the Mariners in almost every respect.
Much has been made of the differences in salaries – Guangzhou’s star player Dario Conca earns more in two months than the whole of the Mariners’ yearly salary cap – let alone having their ship steered by a veritable football legend in Marcello Lippi.
This is a man who has won the UEFA Champions League, dominated the Serie A and has even won a World Cup (swatting aside a pesky Australian team in the process).
But as the saying goes, football is not a game that is played on paper. Wigan showed us as much last weekend!
If Graham Arnold and his boys from the coast are going to take anything from this tie, a clean sheet in this first leg is a must.
Away goals have a tendency to haunt teams in knockout stages (read Australia versus Iran in ’97) so don’t be surprised if Zac Anderson, Patrick Zwaanswijk and Trent Sainsbury all start – with the latter pushing up the field to sit on Conca throughout the game.
Shutting out a side as talented as Guangzhou Evergrande is a monumental task, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who is excited to see how Arnie’s boys go about it.
Join us live at 7.30pm AEST for all the action!
