My advice to Samantha Stosur

Sam Stosur beat Victoria Azarenka to win a tennis final.

If that is the case, and I am still trying to believe it, Australia will win the next two Ashes Tests.

The skies will turn blue, Clarkey will give everyone in the team including Haddin a bowl, and we will win this next Test…and then the one after that.

Sam hasn’t won a tournament since Adam was a pup…and to beat Azarenka for the first or second time in nine or 10 meetings is amazing.

It seems that Sam’s momentum swings run from match to match.

If she gets on a roll, and believes she can maintain that roll, she does and she wins the tournament.

But in individual matches, at big tournaments and small, her allround lack of a completely finished game leads her to lose confidence in mid stream.

She gets to a point where she actually mentally beats herself.

Instead of identifying her issues with her opponent, feeding on her weaknesses rather than focusing on her strengths, changing her game plan accordingly…and recovering her composure, she builds the thought of an impending defeat into a reality.

What she needs to do is focus. See the ball, see the brand on the ball, hit the ball where your head tells you and don’t look up through any shot including your serve.

See the ball hit the racket on every swing, like Roger Federer.

Your mind knows where you want to hit it. Your eyes must not look where you want to hit it.

Leave your mind to work that out. You must see the ball hit the racket and the rest takes care of itself.
