Protect our players, says Adelaide boss Gombau

Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau has called for better protection for players after ruling out battered midfielder Marcelo Carrusca from Friday night’s A-League match against Sydney FC.

Carrusca was repeatedly felled, but also dished out some crude tackles himself, in Adelaide’s 1-0 victory against Newcastle Jets on Sunday.

Gombau said Carrusca suffered leg contusions, and expressed disappointment in the overtly physical treatment the star midfielder received from Newcastle.

“I am disappointed in this because we need to protect the players, we need to protect clean football,” Gombau said post-match.

Adelaide rose to seventh spot on the ladder, a win behind sixth-placed Central Coast who host Perth Glory on Tuesday night to conclude round 12.

The festive season round will be remembered for Melbourne Heart’s sacking of coach John Aloisi and violence between spectators of Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Heart are expected to soon confirm former coach John van ‘t Schip as their interim manager as they search for a permanent replacement for Aloisi, who was winless in his final 17 games in charge.

Meanwhile, Victoria Police are continuing to examine closed circuit television footage of Saturday’s wild brawl between Victory and Wanderers supporters at a Melbourne pub.

Police on Sunday said two men, both from NSW, had been charged – one for alleged offences during the mass fight, the other for offences inside AAMI Park during Saturday night’s 1-1 draw between the clubs.
