Prolific run-scorer Phil Hughes insists he doesn’t feel jilted after another snub from Australian selectors.
The South Australian batsman says he’s genuinely happy for Alex Doolan, who has been drafted into the fifth Ashes Test squad instead of Hughes.
Selectors favoured Doolan over Hughes, who has a superior four-day record this summer.
“It’s fine,” Hughes told reporters in Adelaide on Monday.
“I’m really happy for Alex and I actually gave him a message this morning when I found out. He’s a very good player and a promising player for Australia for the next few years.”
Hughes has scored 549 Sheffield Shield runs this seasons at an average of 61, with his three centuries including a double-ton. Doolan has made 391 Shield runs at 39.10.
Hughes admitted he wasn’t sure of his standing with national selectors.
“I couldn’t tell you, all I can do is keep putting numbers on the board and an opportunity will come up in the future, but you would have to ask the selectors that,” he said.
“I know the drill. I have been in and out of that team for a number of years now and I know how it works.
“It’s just about putting performances on the board and hopefully you get a call one day, and just be ready if you do get that call.”
