The Chiefs kick off their Super Rugby title defence against the Crusaders at AMI Stadium in Christchurch this evening. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5:35pm AEST (7:35pm local).

Just like they have done for the past two seasons, the Chiefs are starting Super Rugby 2014 with a target on their back.

They may be the defending champions, but they will need to step up to a whole new level if they are to make it a three-peat this season.

Last year proved a little more difficult than their 2012 campaign, as other teams had figured out plans against the Chiefs and handled them far better. It was a tough road to go back-to-back.

It’ll be a tough assignment first up for the Chiefs as the Crusaders are one of the elite teams in the New Zealand conference.

The Crusaders know all about expectations, as well as how to build towards success. Importantly, they understand how to how to sustain that success.

The Crusaders are also used to setting the benchmark for Super Rugby teams across the three continents, and it appears they shall continue to do so in 2014.

Their mental toughness and ability of key players to step up when they need to stands them in good stead this season – not to mention the luxury of fielding a team filled with All Black calibre players.

They are undoubtedly set to be one of the dominant forces in the game this season.

Expect a close, intense contest throughout tonight’s match, at least for the first forty minutes.

Both sides will be looking to feel each other out as they find their feet; for the players just returning from injury, there will be a case of nerves early.

Once they’ve blown the cobwebs out a little, look for the intensity to pick up, especially in the ruck and maul areas.

We can be sure both sides will be keen unleash some firepower out wide, which should make for some exciting rugby.

Tip: I have to go with the Crusaders, just. Their class is too good even with the absence of New Zealand Rugby’s top scorer, Dan Carter. The pressure is all on for the Chiefs in this one.
