Jared Waerea-Hargreaves says he hopes “good mate” Darcy Lussick doesn’t receive too long a suspension for the ugly high tackle he copped from him.
Parramatta prop Lussick seems certain to face a lengthy ban when the NRL match review committee announce their findings on Monday.
It follows his wild coathanger tackle which caught Sydney Roosters counterpart Waerea-Hargreaves under the chin during the Roosters’ 56-4 win on Saturday.
Lussick was put on report and may have been lucky to escape sanction in the very next set after appearing to catch Waerea-Hargreaves high again after his fired-up former Manly teammate ran straight at him.
Waerea-Hargreaves spent five games on the sidelines last year for a high tackle on Manly’s George Rose which earned a send off.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson believed Lussick should have been sent off by referee Gavin Badger, but Kiwi international Waerea-Hargreaves was more forgiving.
“I didn’t think the second one was high, it was a good tackle, but the first one was a bit high,” said Warea-Hargreaves.
“Hopefully he doesn’t serve too long. What happens on the field is on the field. It’s all good. It’s footy.
“Me and Darce are mates off the field and it’s all good between us.”
Waerea-Hargreaves admitted that in years gone by he would probably have sought retribution which could have brought sanctions down on him.
“I tried to stay cool, and lead in the right way, I am bit more mature these days,” Waerea-Hargreaves said.
“Possibly in the past I may have seen red. But you don’t want to let the other boys down in the team so you have to get back to what you do best.”
Brisbane’s Josh McGuire is also facing a ban after twice being placed on report in Friday’s 16-12 win over North Queensland.
The prop first incurred the wrath of officials in the 17th minute with a high shot on Gavin Cooper and was booked again for tackling Robert Lui around the legs in the air after he kicked the ball.
Warriors skipper Simon Mannering is also facing punishment over a tackle on his New Zealand teammate Jason Nightingale in his side’s disappointing loss to St George Illawarra at Eden Park.
