Transparency needed from video referees

During the week I was watching NRL 360 and as you would expect they were talking about the recent obstruction calls. They aired footage of the video referee talking through a decision and it got me thinking.

Why can’t they broadcast this on TV for all games so fans can hear them talk through their decisions?

I think if we can understand where the video referee is coming from then people might understand their decisions better. There are a lot of rules in the NRL that are very technical and people don’t understand them.

This means that when the “try” or “no try” decision comes up, fans blow up and this fuels their opinion that referees have no idea.

As a fan, sometimes I just want to understand why a decision was made. It’s not going to stop people complaining about referees but it just allows people to understand calls made within the game. I think people will be less frustrated if they get an explanation.

People will still be frustrated with decisions that are made, however I think that some of that frustration comes from not getting an explanation. It also might help to make people realise that the rules are not black and white and that it’s not so easy for the referees.

I think the NRL and the referees need to show a united front when dealing with these situations. There was an occasion where Tony Archer was explaining an incident with the full time siren in the Melbourne versus Dragons game a couple of weeks ago. When asked if the Dragons would get the two points, his response was that it was the NRL’s decision.

There was also an incident the same week where Todd Greenberg came out and announced the changes in the lifting tackle rules and he blamed the match review committee for not dealing with lifting tackles.

Aren’t they under the same organisation? I feel like they’re shifting the accountability so people don’t associate the poor decisions with the NRL. They should be addressing matters as a team, not separately.

There are a lot of issues within the NRL at the moment and it’s easy for me to sit here and write about them. But I do know that things won’t change overnight. I have confidence that we have the right people in the right places to fix the issues we are encountering – I just hope they can do it quickly before we lose loyal fans.
