Referees: Where do we go from here?

One hot topic that is on everybody’s lips at the moment is referees. A lot of fans are calling for the NRL to go back to one referee.

Does everybody really understand what they are asking for?

The referee will miss things, especially around the ruck. The second referee was bought in to get rid of the illegal wrestling tackles and to also create consistency.

I think we can all agree it has not achieved consistency, but having two referees has definitely cleaned up the ruck. Are we all willing to give that away?

The minute we go to one referee everyone will start complaining that the referee misses things. We’ll have a wrong call that will cost a team the game and everyone will be calling for the two referee system again.

We definitely need to do something because the way the game is currently going is not working.

My suggestion is that we keep two referees and review what the pocket referee can make calls on. We should have them there purely to clean up the ruck.

The more experienced referee would be in control of the whole game, which would create consistency, and the assistant referee would keep the ruck clean and ensure we still have a fast game.

The NRL have confirmed they will not be reviewing the refereeing structure at this stage, however every game I have attended this year I have heard the referees mention they are going back to one ref at different stages throughout the game.

I can only assume it’s to trial the one referee system. It will be interesting to see what type of calls and errors are made during this time. For all we know the issues we are seeing at the moment are being created when there’s only one referee in charge.

Unfortunately we will never get to a place where we there are no errors within our game. Referees make errors just like players do. We just need to come up with a solution that enables the referees to make correct and consistent decisions more often than not.
