St Kilda's Sean Dempster knocked-out against Fremantle

St Kilda Saints’ Sean Dempster was knocked-out when trying to spoil an attempted mark by Fremantle Dockers’ Matthew Pavlich.

The incident occurred in the first quarter of the Round 18 AFL match between the teams at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.

With less than three minutes played and the Saints leading courtesy of a solitary behind, Fremantle launched a kick into their attacking 50. Pavlich was the target and, even though St Kilda’s Jack Newnes tightly marked him, Sean Dempster proved the Saints intent when he charged in to successfully spoil the mark.

Unfortunately for Dempster and Pavlich, both players collided heads while they were looking at the ball. A slight head duck by Pavlich during the mark attempt ended with the Dockers’ head striking Dempster’s right temple. Dempster was simultaneously knocked-out and landed motionless on the grass. Pavlich, while still conscious, was visibly rattled.

There was no controversial decision on the concussion rule as Sean Dempster was stretchered from the field and took no further part in the match. According to St Kilda’s official Twitter account, Dempster was awake and walking around the change rooms soon after he was subbed out of the game.

Pavlich continued to play and kicked two goals for the Dockers.

In what has been titled one of the upsets of the 2014 AFL season, the last-placed St Kilda Saints defeated the then second-placed Fremantle Dockers 118-60.
