Fit-again paceman Ryan Harris will get a Gabba audition for an immediate Test recall with a long-awaited first-class return this weekend.

On track to open the bowling for Australia in the the four-Test series against India, Harris will Thursday be named in Queensland’s Sheffield Shield side to play NSW.

His return from knee surgery, following his series-clinching exploits in South Africa in March, is a major boost to Michael Clarke’s outfit following the demoralising 2-0 whitewash by Pakistan in the UAE.

A fit Harris is viewed as a certain new-ball selection beside Mitchell Johnson for the first Test of the summer, starting at the Gabba on December 4.

The 35-year-old will return for the Bulls on Sunday at the same venue and could also play a second Shield game the following week against Tasmania at Allan Border Field.

Ranked as the No.2 bowler in Test cricket, Harris showed his worth in 12 straight Tests from July last year – taking 56 wickets at 21.66 to raise his career tally to 103 in just 24 appearances.

Although he initially aimed to return for the start of the Shield season, the spearhead has made strong progress in his return to bowling in Brisbane in the past fortnight.

As well as two club cricket outings, Harris bowled 27 trouble-free overs in the Futures League, taking match figures of 3-94 and hitting 54 with the bat.

Harris was set to be named by Queensland selectors on Wednesday afternoon but the panel delayed naming their squad due to the Bulls’ abysmal start to the Shield season – losing away to South Australia and Western Australia.
