Liverpool will be gunning for their third straight Premier League victory when they meet Sunderland at Anfield on Sunday morning. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:00am (AEDT).

The Reds have gone from title contenders last season to find themselves in a mid-table battle this season following the loss of key personnel, including Luis Suarez. But with six points from their last two games, they will be hoping to continue their climb back up the table this weekend.

Brendan Rodgers’ side, who had previously gone five Premier League games without a win, had to come from behind to beat Leicester and all the talk post Wednesday’s win has been whether goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will keep his spot in the starting side.

If Simon Mignolet is dropped, it will be just the 24th appearance for Aussie, Brad Jones, since he joined the club in 2010.

However, Mignolet should not be held responsible for all of Liverpool’s defensive lapses this season, even Brendan Rodgers accepted recently that his side have to defend better as a unit if they are to get back to challenging the top four.

At the other end of the park, Adam Lallana will be looking to continue his rich run of form while Raheem Stirling and Rickie Lambert will relish the opportunity to run at a Sunderland defence that has leaked 23 goals this season.

Meanwhile Gus Poyet’s Sunderland side will be looking to bounce back after a last start loss to a rampant Manchester City mid-week.

The Black Cats, who prior to the 4-1 loss at the Stadium of Light, hadn’t lost a game since the 2-nil defeat at the hands of Arsenal in October, haven’t won in their last 15 trips to Anfield but head into this weekend’s clash full of confidence.

And rightly so – after a disastrous October that saw them ship 13 goals in three weeks, Poyet has managed to pull his side clear of the relegation zone with some gritty performances in the last few weeks, including a surprising draw against league leaders Chelsea.

On-loan Liverpool man, Sebastian Coates, who made his Premier League debut for Sunderland against City, will be vital if Sunderland are to leave Anfield with a vital three points.

Liverpool are desperate to take maximum points and they’ll be buoyed by a raucous Kop but with both sides playing their third game in a week, the winner of this one will be the side that best manages the mental and physical fatigue.
