WATCH: County leg-spinner presents - the weirdest bowling run-up ever
Calvin Harrison mixed things up in his delivery stride starting behind the-non-striker, then going between the umpire and the stumps to deliver the ball…
Is there anything sports fans love more than a slab of sporting schadenfreude? When it comes to cricket, there is nothing better than seeing one of the world’s top-line bowlers deliver a ball which barely makes it on the pitch.
Last night wunderkind Pat Cummins, despite playing a key role in decimating England, pulled out one of the worst deliveries we’ve seen in recent times. He bowled a wide you might have seen around my place during the final session of Christmas-time backyard cricket.
My excuse was several beers and a complete lack of talent. At least Pat claimed a wicket to spare his blushes.
So what better time to put together a list of the best of the worst: the worst wides in cricketing history?
To kick off our worst-of list, here is our good friend Steve Harmison. As Eddie Murphy would say, if you look up ‘wide’ in the dictionary, there’d be a picture of Steve Harmison shaking his head with an embarrassed smile.
Not only that, but the much anticipated but ultimately terrible ball was a perfect representation of England’s performance at the 2006-07 Ashes.
More recently Morne Morkel pulled out one of the worst ever seen, and unlike Harmison he wasn’t saved by the slips.
Even Dale Steyn, the best bowler in the world for the past five years or so, can be susceptible to a bit of wide action.
Then finally, no cricketing fail compilation can be complete without the addition of this gem from the ‘Man of Steel’ himself.
What’s worse than bowling quite possibly the most awkward and terrible ball ever seen on a cricket pitch while on overseas duty as Prime Minister of Australia in front of watching eyes and plenty of cameras?
Doing it three times. In. A. Row.
What do you think, Roarers? Anything I missed? There’s plenty of wides out there, let me know your favourites.
