This will be one of the toughest tasks of Millman’s young career, having been given a wildcard for the Australian Open after an impressive run at the Brisbane International, which included a strong showing against Roger Federer in the second round.
Millman told News Corp he was confident about his form on return from injury.
“I feel as though I’m back playing the tennis I was playing before my injury,” Millman said.
“I’m feeling pretty good at the moment and even though it’s a very tough first round match up, I’m going in very confident after how well I’ve played recently.
“My performances at the Brisbane International, and especially against Roger, showed me that I can match it with the best when I play well.
“Preparations have been going really well, I’ve been down here in Melbourne since last Tuesday and even though the weather hasn’t been great, I’ve had a lot of time on court.”
Leonardo Mayer is an established pro on the ATP Tour, and is seeded 26th coming into the Open.
Mayer showed he was in good form in Sydney, falling one match short of the final with a loss to Mikhail Kukushkin.
He has had a tough time at the Australian Open of late, though, having only reached the second round once in the last five years.
