International sporting events unite nations all over the world, as fans celebrate sport and support their country. However the cricket World Cup drags on way too long and overstays its welcome.

It takes four weeks for the FIFA World Cup to come and go. The Olympics, which accommodates over 10,000 athletes competing in over 300 events, only lasts 17 days.

However the ICC cricket World Cup, which has only 14 nations participating, takes six long weeks to complete.

With both Australia and New Zealand hosting this year’s World Cup there are a total of 14 venues to play at – ample resources to play more than two games a day.

For Australian fans the wait has been a long one, with a week between each game they have played. That was enough for me to lose interest.

In spite of this, the ICC saw some record crowds during the first week of the tournament. However crowd attendance has died down when powerhouse teams are not playing.

A similar format to that of the Twenty20 World Cup may be an idea – that competition lasts just over three weeks.

It’s in the ICC’s best interest to restructure the tournament to continue to create a spectacle and interest spectators.
