Match result:

Sam Stosur has cruised into the second round of the French Open with a comfortable win over Madison Brengle.

SCORE: STOSUR 6 6
BRENGLE 1 3

After winning the Strasbourg title last week, Stosur continued her great form, with a commanding display over her American rival.

She didn’t allow her opponent to get into the match, and dominated her second serve with plenty of power.

After Brengle held her serve, in the 2nd game of the match, Stosur would win 5 straight games to win the first set 6-1.

She would punish the second serve of Brengle and force her opponent to move around the court.

Stosur would continue the domination in the second set and race to a 2-0 lead with a break.

Brengle though, to her credit, would fight back and level at 3-3 with a break of her own.

From there though Stosur would win three straight games, and win her 9th straight first round match at Roland Garros.

Stosur’s power was too much in the end for her American opponent and Brengle also struggled to take her chances.

She missed 4 break point chances, and only broke once.

Stosur on the other hand broke 5 times out of the 10 chances she had.

The Australian now moves on and plays Amandine Hesse who eliminated fellow Australian, Jarmila Gajdosova, earlier on Monday night.

That match will be played on Wednesday night.

Match preview:

Sam Stosur will look to continue her form from last week when she takes on American, Madison Brengle, in the opening round of the 2015 French Open.

Last week was a fantastic week for the Australian as she took out the Strasbourg title in France.

A three set win over Kristina Mladenovic gave the Queenslander her seventh WTA singles title – including the US Open – and her second on clay.

She will now look to continue that form when she faces Madison Brengle at the French Open.

The event at Roland Garros has been one of her best Grand Slam events and she hasn’t lost in the first round here since 2006.

In that time she has made the semi-final twice and was runner up in 2010.

Ironically the last time she won a clay event – which was in Charleston – was in 2010 when she made the final at Roland Garros.

She will be looking to repeat that this year but faces a tough prospect first up. Brengle, ranked 36 in the world, has had a great start to 2015.

She has made two finals, in Hobart and the ITF event in Osprey, and reached a career high of 35 earlier this month.

Her recent form though isn’t ideal with four straight losses, including one to fellow Australian, Ajla Tomljanovic, last week in Strasbourg.

I make mention of that because Tomljanovic is coached by the same person as Stosur in Dave Taylor.

Taylor, who was Stosur’s coach from 2007-2013, is back in the fold after the pair split before the US Open that year.

After watching his other player destroy Brengle last week, he should help Stosur do the same tonight.

These two have faced each other once before with Stosur winning an epic three set contest in Hobart last year.

With Stosur’s form in Australia – which isn’t great compared to overseas events – this is a significant win.

This is one of those danger matches for Stosur. Brengle is a great counter punch player and will match her from the baseline.

Stosur needs to make sure her serve is on song tonight. Plenty of slice serves, and aces, should give her free service games.

This match looks to be one that will go the distance.

I predict Stosur to win but it might be a very close match between the two.

PREDICTION – Stosur 2-1.
