Match result:

Stanislas Wawrinka has won his 2nd Grand Slam title with a 4 set win over Novak Djokovic in the 2015 French Open final.

WAWRINKA 4 6 6 6
DJOKOVIC 6 4 3 4

After losing the first set, with an erratic game in the 7th game, Wawrinka would control the last three to win the French Open for the first time.

His 59 winners were no match for the world number 1 as Wawrinka blasted his way to the title.

With the win Wawrinka becomes one of only a handful of players who have won both the junior and pro title at Roland Garros.

In 2003 he defeated Brian Baker in 3 sets to win the junior title.

It didn’t start well for the Swiss number two, as he conceded the first set 6-4 to Djokovic.

The 7th game of the set cost him dearly, as he gifted the world number 1 the break.

Three errors, and a double fault, gave the Serbian a one set advantage.

The tide turned in the second set, as Wawrinka came into the game.

He tightened up his serve, and started to hit more winners, as he attacked Djokovic.

It paid dividends as he created break point chances.

Unfortunately he couldn’t take any of them as Djokovic saved 4 break points from games 4 to 8 in the set.

On the fifth, which was a set point, Wawrinka would finally take the advantage and level at a set apiece.

Djokovic, who had 30-0 in the game, would lose 4 straight point.

Wawrinka continued the dominance in the third set and had three break points in the 2nd game of the set.

Djokovic would save them all but couldn’t do the same job in the 6th game of the set.

After two incredible winners, Wawrinka had 0-40, and then had the break for a 4-2 lead.

He would take the set 6-3 and be one away from the title.

Djokovic, who fought all the way, had other ideas and broke for a 3-0 lead in the fourth set.

Wawrinka would fight back though and break back to level at 3-3 in the set.

The match started to get intense as both players had chances but failed to take them.

Djokovic would save two break points in the 7th game of the set as Wawrinka would follow suit with three in the 8th game.

In the next game, Wawrinka would have two more break points, and finally take the break with the 2nd one.

Eight points later, after one match point was saved, Wawrinka would seal the match and become a 2 time Grand Slam champion.

His power was too much for Djokovic and he hit more winners.

He also hit less unforced errors in the final three sets.

He hit 47 winners to 23 in the last three sets and had 2 less unforced errors.

Wawrinka was brutally powerful when you look at the stats.

It was a brilliant match of tennis between two players at their best. It was exactly how a final should be played.

The whole field now heads on to the grass and all eyes start to look at Wimbledon.

Wawrinka and Djokovic will be contenders there and both will now eye that prize at the start of July.

With Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer winning the last ten French Open’s between them, no one else has got close to winning the title in Paris.

Now, after both of these players defeated Nadal and Federer respectively in this year’s event, they have the chance to etch their name on the La Coupe des Mousquetaires tonight.

For Djokovic it would complete his Grand Slam after winning titles at the other three places over the last six years.

He has already been in two finals but lost on both occasions to Rafael Nadal. Wawrinka is looking for his second Grand Slam final and makes his debut in the final here at Roland Garros.

When asked how it feels to make the final, Wawrinka said “my dream was to play Roland Garros, not to win it.”
“The people who have won it, to me they are mutants.”

If Wawrinka wins today he can call himself one of the mutants of the 21st century.

He is now considered among the best in the game and a second title would dispel the theories of him being a one title player.

In comparison Djokovic is chasing his ninth Grand Slam title. He would also move 5,000 ranking points clear of Federer in second and be on track for a Grand Slam – all four titles – in 2015.

Recent history between these two players have been incredible. Tonight is the 23rd meeting with Djokovic leading 19-3 overall.

The last four though, at Grand Slam level, have all gone to five sets. In 2013, they would have their first classic, with Djokovic winning at the Australian Open 12-10 in the fifth.

At the US Open later that year Djokovic would again win in five sets. Last year, on his way to the Australian Open title, Wawrinka finally defeated Djokovic with a 9-7 win in the fifth set.

This year, Djokovic got his revenge, with a five-set win on his way to the title. On clay Djokovic leads 5-1 with the last meeting between the two on clay coming in 2012.

This match, as has been the case in the last four matches, has been about Djokovic counter punching the power from Wawrinka.

At times Wawrinka gets on top with other times Djokovic controlling the power and hitting winners of his own. The serve of both players is also important. When Wawrinka has served well, he has beaten, or come close to beating Djokovic.

When he misses first serves, and loses plenty of second serve points, the Djoker gets on top. The serve will be vital for Wawrinka today.

Fitness will also be crucial with Wawrinka getting an extra day over Djokovic. How that impacts the match will be interesting.

This is going to be a close match and five sets is certainly not out of the question. Djokovic has faced tough battles to be here but his tennis has been the best in this tournament. Wawrinka will need to play at his best to beat him.

I feel this is the year of the Djoker and he will finally get his hands on the French Open crown.

PREDICTION – Djokovic 3-2.
