Michael Clarke firmly believes Chris Rogers will still be a vital part of Australia’s Ashes campaign despite his Caribbean woes.
The 37-year-old’s Test swansong has started in underwhelming fashion after he was ruled out of the second and final match against the West Indies starting in Jamaica this week.
Rogers is still suffering symptoms of the concussion which ruled him out of the opening Test in Dominica and despite his condition improving, team doctor Peter Brukner ruled him out on Tuesday.
“While most concussions resolve within a week there is a significant number who remain symptomatic and require a longer period of recovery,” Brukner said.
“Unfortunately Chris is in this category.
“We will continue to monitor his progress and hopefully it will not be too long before he is back to full training.”
Rogers is expected to now fly out of Jamaica early to begin his preparations for the five-Test Ashes series against England starting on July 8 in Cardiff.
With the veteran opener announcing he’ll retire at the end of the Ashes, some are speculating he may not get back into the Test line-up before his career comes to an end.
But Clarke denies Rogers’ Test story has come to an end.
“He’s scored a lot of runs there, knows the conditions as an experienced top order batter,” Clarke said.
“It helps a lot over in those conditions against a pretty good attack.”
