Simona Halep joins Serena Williams and Petra Kvitova as the only remaining top ten seeds at New York after some of the tournament favourites dropped out of the race early on.
She is in peak form, having only played one full match all tournament for a total of thirty games, a huge contrast when compared to Rogers’ 97 games in five matches.
Halep now shapes as the second favourite to win her first ever grand slam after Williams and with a win, will set up a matchup with either of Barbora Strycova and 24th seed Sabine Lisicki.
In her past ten matches, second seed Halep has a win-loss record of 8-2 with a loss to Serena Williams at Cincinnati and a retirement against Belinda Bencic after she required just three more games to win the Canadian Masters.
Halep experienced a retirement on the other end of the court in the first round of the US Open progressing past Marina Erakovic before defeating Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round for her first win of the tournament.
Shelby Rogers has risen to the occasion and is now into sixth game at the US Open since she graced the court against Grace Min in the Quarter-Final qualifying round.
Rogers is currently ranked 154th however, the American has not let that stand in her way with an impressive win-loss record in her past ten matches of 8-2. She is coming off a win over Kurumi Nara in the second round 6-4, 6-4 and Sachia Vickery in the first round 6-2, 6-2. Rogers defeated Alla Kudryavtseva, Mandy Minella and Grace Min in the qualifying stages to appear in her fourth grand slam on home soil.
Halep and Rogers have never played each other.
