Well well well… The Crowd voting and I are both feeling very smug right now, with a perfect four from four in the first week of Rugby World Cup expert tipping.

Chris got a very respectable three out of four, with Ireland the only wrong pick, while Brett… well, let’s just say Brett’s ‘expert’ status is very much up in the air right now.

Early favourites to take his spot include Biltongbek, Harry Jones and Diggercane, with his replacement to be decided by Roar plebiscite.

Now, to the tips! Winners go first, and you can leave your tips in the comments below to help elucidate The Crowd’s winning mantra.

South Africa, Australia

I really wanted to find a reason to tip the Springboks. I found none when I rolled the tape of their match against Wales, and found none when I watched New Zealand destroy France. However, when both Brett and Chris tipped New Zealand, I felt I had no other choice.

I’ve always loved watching South Africans play rugby. Call me odd, or whatever, but something about locks twice the size of everyone else running like flankers, flankers running like number 8s, and number 8s running like oversized inside centres just appeals to me.

I’d love them to win this game, but this is most certainly a heart tip, not a head one.

And Australia? Well, I’m certainly not convinced about them after last week, but I do think they have another gear. Argentina are a good match-up for the Wallabies, and they have similar backlines. There are threats all over the park from the Pumas, but the Wallabies will out-think them, a bit like Ireland did for long periods after their blistering start last week.

Should be a cracker.

Tips:
New Zealand, Australia

New Zealand have too many guns for South Africa, although nothing can be taken for granted, as the Wallabies can attest to after their escape against the Scots.

The Wallabies will bounce back to their best as they go back to realising success must be earned rather than simply expected.

I still believe the Wallabies can and will take out the Cup.

New Zealand showed their intent last weekend against France, which confirmed most opinions that it’s now the All Blacks’ title to lose. South Africa always lift against their old rivals, but they just don’t have the firepower.

Australia used their life last week against Scotland, and there can be no further hiccups from here.

I’m expecting Michael Cheika to use all his tricks: golf clubs, sledge hammers, tomahawks; every dressing room prop in his kit bag to make sure the Wallabies are up for this game.

Bonus Bing Predicts: Bing managed to get three from four last week and has few surprises this week, giving New Zealand a 76 per cent chance over South Africa, and Australia at a narrower 68 per cent chance of overcoming Argentina.
